Right ventricle

Forms much of the anterior surface. Find it to the patient’s right of the anterior interventricular groove.

Spatial anatomy

Read the relationships.

Orient the heart before naming its parts. The right ventricle occupies much of the anterior surface; the left ventricle forms the apex. Their surface boundary is the anterior interventricular groove. The left atrium lies mainly posteriorly, so much of it is concealed in this view.

Think in three dimensions. The visible surface is a map of relationships, not a view into the chambers.

Anatomical references

This is an anterior external view. Internal chambers, valve leaflets, septal branches and conduction tissue are not directly visible. Numbered markers identify surface regions; the circulation sequence is a separate schematic. Coronary branching and supply territories vary between individuals.

Why a table

A common view. A more involved class.

A shared surface gives faculty and students a common reference for practical teaching. Isolate a structure, reveal its neighbours and relate the anatomy to a clinical image.

Alongside cadaveric teaching, virtual dissections can be repeated and cuts reversed. Restore a layer, revisit a difficult relationship and invite students to explain what they see.
